Survey: When Do You Take Action?

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Environment | No Comments »

The post was about bicyclists putting stickers on cars that were parked in bike lanes. The reaction ranged from “So, now Treehugger is encouraging “eco-vandalism” by way of bike lanes?!!” to “Tell a cop that someone is parked in a bike lane!? HA! Like that would work. The cop would most likely laugh at you.” That’s what happened to No Impact Man in New York. That’s what happened to blogger

On The Stands: Dwell on Suburbs with Attitude

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Environment | No Comments »

The December/January Dwell notes that “in certain circles, “suburbia” truly is a dirty word.” However they manage to find a number of homes that “turn the suburban paradigm on its head- from unlikely renovations to prefabricated additions.

They do not entirely succeed in making one believe that living in the suburbs can be sustainable, but they are convincing in making it look very pretty and modern.

Recipe of the Week: Red Wine, Red Bean and Portobello Ragout

This is a great way to end November with a hearty vegetarian meal that helps you segue between Thanksgiving and Hanukkah or Christmas. The recipe suggests that you serve the ragout over pasta, but we had it over couscous with roasted garlic and it was good. You can also put it over rice or tofu, and if you have leftovers you can add vegetable stock or water and make it into a soup.

The average Australian basket of food has travelled over 70,000 kilometres from producer to consumer, suggests the first study of its kind presented at the Agri-Food XIV conference in Brisbane this week and reported on Australian ABC. But more importantly they point out that food miles are not the be all and end all when judging food impacts and can be misunderstood:

Soundproofing and Climate Change

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Environment | No Comments »

Coincident with our coverage of Enermax, we find an article by Kevin Surace on how “New Approaches to Quiet Buildings Can Help Address Climate Change.” He is not a disinterested observer, but CEO of Serious Materials, the startup that is looking to make a new kind of drywall without 90% of the CO2 or embodied energy. (TreeHugger here)

He does, however, nail the reasons why density and cities are so important: “If everyone in the U.S. lived in a condo, apartment or town home in an urban setting, we could cu…
