Lions and Tigers on Plates, Oh My!

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Environment | No Comments »

Another good reason to go vegetarian: the bitchin’ kitchen accessories. Art director/visual artist Chris Rubino has designed a clever, cute plate especially for the herbivorous among us, featuring a menagerie of wildlife that are better to look at than to eat. Plop down a nice salad, or maybe some vegetarian moussaka, and you’ve got the makings of a good time.

The first plate of the ser…

New figures released by comScore show that YouTube remains the outright leader in online video.
Based on videos viewed, Google owned sites (YouTube + Google Video, but mostly YouTube) commanded a 28.3% market share in the United States in September with Fox Interactive Media (FIM) sites (MySpace and others) on 4.2%. The figures (see chart) demonstrate [...]

Vimeo Founder Fired, Does A Bong Hit

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Web 2.0 | No Comments »

Jakob Lodwick, the co-founder of IAC owned video site Vimeo, left the company today. The reason? Apparently Lodwick didn’t see eye to eye with the IAC brass on creative issues, and specifically had a run in with IAC chief Barry Diller three weeks ago.
That’s not surprising, given the picture Lodwick chose to include with [...]

Google Streetview Airbrushing Their European Edition

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Web 2.0 | No Comments »

Google’s Streetview was celebrated at launch, but caught some flack when they were captured the public in some embarrassing situations.
Google’s hoping to avoid similar issues when they complete their launch overseas. According to Google’s senior privacy council, Google will begin altering photos to make sure that faces and license plate numbers aren’t recognizable. The move’s [...]

Best Renewables Project in the West – “Where’s the Competition?” Ask Winners…

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Environment | No Comments »

The UK-based renewable energy company Ecotricity recently won an award from the renewable energy agency for South West England for its development of three giant wind turbines at the industrial Avonmouth Docks site on the outskirts of Bristol (which we featured here). However, in typically activist fashion, rather than rest on their laurels the company took the opportunity to call on the region to step up its game when it comes to fighting climate change. This from their press release:It

Avoiding Climate (Offset) Chaos

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Environment | No Comments »

Carbon offsets may be the new junk food – habit-forming and ultimately not so healthy – especially if, in the case of offsets, stopping global warming is the goal. More and more organizations are warning that buying offsets is not only a tricky undertaking for businesses and individuals, it might not be that eco-friendly. Right now there’s still no fool-proof way to insure your dollars go to a project that actually reduces CO2, or even go to a real project at all. The price to offset each ton of carbon also varies widely, between a low of about $7 – 8 to a high of as much as $40.

Material World: Enermax Soundproofing Panels

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Environment | No Comments »

TreeHugger pushes higher density living, but one thing people complain about is noise. It is hard to build a really soundproof wood frame partition wall, but new products like Enermax can make a big difference. It is a 1/2 thick fibreboard sheathing with a foil face. Bonus points: CFC and VOC free, it’s made from 98% waste fibre with a corn based binder….

How Does Your Garden Grow?

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Environment | No Comments »

The Observer must be one of the few newspapers in the world to have its own organic allotment garden. And an ongoing blog about it too. It’s a year old now and the garden’s development has involved community members, local school children and newspaper staff. The first weeks were hard–the amateur gardeners had no idea of how bad the site was, with iron, rusted piping and a concrete wall embedded in the ground. Having cleared that out with the help of a digger, they were on their way. Since this is England and everything and anything will grow here, they planted in late November and by Christmas had 3 inch high shoots of g…

November 30th, 2007 -- Posted in Environment | No Comments »

In support of World Aids Day tomorrow, 1st December, we want to tell you about the fantastic footballs being made by The Soul of Africa Initiative. You have heard about this amazing organisation’s work through Sami Grover who enthused about their Khulani fair trade moccasins earlier this year. The footballs are made from 32 panels of leather and are hand stitched by women using newly acquired skills thanks to their training fro…
